Social Media Specialist
Growing up, I was always fascinated by storytelling, particularly in visual form. I would tear through my family’s stack of VHS tapes watching any and every (age appropriate) movie I could find. My adoration for movies led me to creating my own silly videos with my friends and cousins that I would edit together and show my loved ones. This progressed for years and years until it was time for me to head to college, where I discovered a program at Butler University that matched perfectly with what I wanted to do.
During my 4 years at Butler, I studied a wide variety of digital media areas, including graphic design, audio production, and video production. My personal favorite courses however, were my film studies classes. Studying and analyzing film deepened my love for the medium and helped me understand visual storytelling even more, improving my overall skills.
My love for film inspired me to get involved with Heartland Film in Indianapolis. After attending one of their festivals, I knew I wanted to be a part of the organization in some capacity. I first got involved as a Video Production intern, where I edited pre-show clips, social media posts, and awards shows for two of their festivals. I enjoyed my experience so much that I returned a few months later as a Film Programming intern, where I got to work with their programming team to curate and schedule the 2022 Indy Shorts International Film Festival. This was without a doubt one of the most fulfilling experiences I have had and encouraged me to continue working with Heartland as a volunteer pre-screener today.
After graduating from Butler University in May of 2022 with my Bachelor’s Degree in Digital Media Production and Film Studies, my job search led me to MJ2 Marketing. After a chat with Jenn and getting to meet the rest of the team, I felt strongly that this was a good place for me to start my career and enter the workforce.
Q&A with Nick Denbow
What is your favorite thing about working at MJ2?
My favorite thing about working at MJ2 is the team. Everyone has been so supportive in welcoming me and really values the work that we do. I am appreciative of all the guidance that has been given to me, I have already learned so much.
If you could trade skills for a day with another MJ2 team member, who would it be and why?
I would love to trade skills with Grace as her design skills are top notch. I have a pretty standard level of design skills currently, so to be able to master that craft like Grace has would be a great asset.
What are your top 3 favorite Columbus-based companies?
Without a doubt, my number one is the Gateway Film Center. As a non-profit and independent cinema, they stand for everything I love about film. They have a wonderful atmosphere, friendly staff, and delicious drinks, which really makes for a great experience every time I go (which is a lot). In fact, you can find me there nearly every weekend for a double feature and one of their signature “Mysterious Long Island” drinks.
I also enjoy shopping at Half Price Books and eating at Raising Cane’s of course.
What is your favorite relaxing activity?
Other than watching movies, I love a nice, long walk to clear the mind.
What are you currently reading?
Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez
What is your motto or personal mantra?
“It’ll all work out” is something I remind myself often.
How do you take your coffee?
I enjoy a Caramel Macchiato, hot during fall and winter, and iced during spring and summer.
