Tell us about your background… education, previous work experience, what propelled you to establish Merge?

I studied telecommunications at Ohio University, graduating in 2005. Post-college, I worked in retail, landscaping, and education before starting Merge. I knew I wanted to begin a career in website development, but I didn’t have the specific background or experience to gain employment at the level I needed. I started by finding clients using any method I could. I took on small projects, learning as I went, and spent as much time as I could, working through online courses and tutorials. As time went on, I gained experience that allowed me to work on bigger projects – ensuring the sustainability of my business.

Tell us about the work you did through through Merge?  Favorite project? 

My work through Merge was heavily focused on helping business owners and marketing professionals find solutions to their needs and ways to achieve their goals on the web that fit them. Many of my favorite projects involved uncovering the root of a problem that a business was having and finding an appropriate solution to the problem.

What is your philosophy towards developing websites?

I focus my development on structure and code that any developer could look at and quickly understand. I love developing websites that look beautiful, avoid unnecessary complexity, and load quickly. Achieving all of those at the same time is a challenge I enjoy! 

What is one thing about SEO that you think every business owner should understand? 

The primary ingredient in a successful SEO recipe is high quality content. Without it, very little can be accomplished. 

What will be your primary focus as you join MJ2 Marketing on a full-time basis?

I will be focused on continuing to grow the website development branch of MJ2, overseeing the SEO work we are doing for our clients, and implementing Google Adwords services.

What do you hope to bring to MJ2 Marketing? 

I hope to bring not only my expertise in a few key areas, but an infectious positive attitude and a drive to continually improve.

What are you most looking forward to in this new phase of your career? 

I love that I will be working closely with a team – experts in a variety of different areas. This is a big change for me, considering that I have worked primarily as a team of one previously.

Tell us about your family

I have been married to my wife, Lindsay, for 10+ years and have 2 boys, ages 5 and 6.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I enjoy being home with my family, watching my boys play baseball, and participating in community events. I am also a co-organizer of the Westerville Web meetup – a community organization that provides resources and events designed to foster collaboration, networking, and learning in the technology, design, entrepreneurship, and business communities.

What is on your playlist? 

I have recently been listening to a lot of Cold War Kids, K.Flay, Tycho, Billie Eilish, and Beck.

What is the last movie you saw? Book you read?

The last movie I saw in a theater was Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The last book I read was Rework by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson – a book I read every couple years.
