Always target by location and age
The first two options in the Facebook Ads Manager are some of the most important. Before you begin to narrow down your audience by demographics, interests, and behaviors, you should specify an appropriate location and age.
As a general rule of thumb, if your business has a location-specific market, try to target a 25-mile radius around every major city your business operates in. As far as age goes, most B2C products will be fine targeting the default 18+ age group, but B2Bs may want to raise the minimum age.
Think about who your target audience is
When it’s time to move on to advanced audience demographics, consider who makes up your target audience. How educated are they? What TV shows do they watch? Are they celebrating a special day soon? All of this can be targeted in Facebook ads. Take full advantage of this by matching your customer profiles to your ad strategy.
Decide how broad or how narrow you want to be
Remember, the more specific your targeting criteria, the less potential reach your ad will have. Set too many conditions and you might not reach enough people. Set too few conditions and you risk making the net too large and capturing too many people who are not in your target demographic. It will take a little bit of practice and tweaking to find your sweet spot, so remember to continually monitor your ads and make adjustments, if necessary.
